    This week's winner
It certainly wasn't a great week for the broad-based S&P 500, which dipped 2.4% over the past five trading sessions. That didn't seem to matter much to network equipment manufacturer QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) , which added on 3.7% this week following a restructuring plan announcement on Tuesday. The company's plan involves job cuts and streamlining its operations in order to save $20 million annually. Although it'll incur some negative impact on its GAAP earnings in the interim, I highly doubt this changes the long-term outlook or consistent profitability that drew me to own QLogic in the first place.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Shareholders in networking equipment maker QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) certainly have a reason to rejoice, as it will be added to the S&P Small Cap 600 as of the close of business on Friday. Being added to the S&P Small Cap 600 index will mean that mutual funds that track the index will be required to purchase shares of QLogic. With more than $5 in cash per share on its balance sheet, the downside risk in QLogic is quickly abating.

    Also in the news ...
Let's not sugarcoat this one iota: It was a really busy week for earnings news, with network equipment maker QLogic (NASDAQ: QLGC  ) , printing and IT specialist Xerox (NYSE: XRX  ) , and telecommunication services provider Orange (NYSE: ORAN  ) all reporting results.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

Barnes & Noble is the last remaining nationwide bookseller but has faced problems with increased online competition. The stock has experienced a lot of volatility in recent years and seems to be struggling at current prices due to negative earnings releases. In the past four quarters, investors in the company have expected more as earnings have been mixed and revenues decreasing. Relative to its peers and sector, Barnes & Noble has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what Barnes & Noble does in coming quarters.

When, in my youth, I left a job, I imagined that the whole thing fell into a shambling chaos immediately afterward. In reality, things probably got better. So I guess I feel the pain that William Lynch must be feeling the day after his resignation hit the press. Overnight, the market reacted in typical fashion, plunging the share price into a spiral, and, at the time of this writing...Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) was up almost 4%. Ouch.

Top Building Product Stocks To Buy Right Now: Iamgold Corporation(IAG)

IAMGOLD Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, development, and production of mineral resource properties worldwide. It primarily explores for gold, silver, zinc, copper, niobium, diamonds, and other metals. The company holds interests in eight operating gold mines, a niobium producer, a diamond royalty, and exploration and development projects located in Africa and the Americas. Its advanced exploration and development projects include the Westwood project in Canada; and the Quimsacocha project, which consists of 3 mining concessions covering an aggregate area of approximately 8,030 hectares in Ecuador. The company was formerly known as IAMGOLD International African Mining Gold Corporation and changed its name to IAMGOLD Corporation in June 1997. IAMGOLD Corporation was founded in 1990 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Elsewhere, losers were few and far between, but many gold stocks remained under pressure as the yellow metal only managed a modest bounce after yesterday's plunge. In particular, major producer Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) and gold miner IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) fell between 4% and 5%. Both companies were on the list of holdings of billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson's gold fund as of Dec. 31, and with rumors circulating that Paulson may have to liquidate positions to handle coming redemption requests, the stocks that he reportedly owns could see further selling pressure even if gold bullion prices rise.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) still has an interest in theQuimsacocha gold mine it sold to INV Metals last year, which has an indicated mineral resource estimated at 3.3 million ounces gold. China'sEcuacorriente is also pursing a major copper project at Panantza-San Carlos, and International Minerals will seek out gold and silver at Rio Blanco.

  • [By Michael Blair]

IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.
