Top 10 China Companies To Buy Right Now

Following up on the news that it's the likely winner of a $985 million contract to design the Madera-to-Fresno segmentof California's new high-speed railway, civil engineering firm Tutor Perini (NYSE: TPC  ) announced Tuesday that it's scored a second major contract win.

In San Francisco, the Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has picked Tutor as the low bidder on phase 2 of its Third Street Light Rail Program. Less high profile than statewide high-speed rail, the SFMTA project is also a bit less lucrative -- but at $840 million in estimated value, only just a bit.

Tutor will be hired to build three underground subway stations for SFMTA, located at Union Square/Market Street, Chinatown, and Yerba Buena Gardens/Moscone Center, as well as a surface-level station at 4thand Brannan Streets and trackwork and systems from the 4thand Brannan Station to the Chinatown Station.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Louis Navellier]

As China’s economy grows, the Chinese middle class has taken flight — literally. Providing the travel arrangements for this newfound class of Chinese travelers is Universal Travel Group (UTA).

The company provides domestic and international airline ticketing services, along with cargo transportation agency services. But it’s not just flights that UTA helps citizens book. The company also provides hotel reservations, tour planning, ground transportation, railway and express delivery and air delivery services.

UTA is the travel agency in China, and considering the shares have booked a 190% gain over the past 12 months, it certainly seems like the sky is the limit for UTA.

I rate UTA an A, making it a strong buy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Hsu]

The company will change the ratio of its shares on August 18—essentially the same thing as a four-for-one split. So, if EDU is trading at $120, shareholders will receive four shares worth $30 each.

As I’ve mentioned, I think the stock split is bullish for stock performance, because more small retail investors may be interested in purchasing EDU stock at the lower price.

A good example of this stock split effect is Baidu. Baidu did a 10-for-1 split last year when the share price was around $800. Since then, Baidu’s price has almost doubled! EDU is a buy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Stephen]

ThinkEquity sees the China travel market should remain robust in 2011, with approximately mid-teens growth. Additionally, while concerns linger with CTRP regarding high speed train rollouts, tougher comps in 2011 due to the Shanghai expo, and airline commission rates, it believes these concerns have created an attractive entry point in Ctrip.

  • [By Mark]

Ctrip (CTRP) is the leading online travel agent in China, where a growing middle class and increased business activity mean the travel industry is booming. Last year, the recession slowed revenue growth at Ctrip to 35%; in the latest quarter, it was back up to 47% … and profit margins were a very healthy 42.2%. Ctrip was on the list three years ago.

  • [By Hawkinvest]

Trina Solar Ltd. (TSL) is one of the most respected solar companies in China. It has a strong balance sheet, especially when compared to many other Chinese solar companies. Trina Solar recently reported financial results for fourth quarter and full year of 2011. The loss for 2011 was $37.8 million, or 54 cents per share. Trina Solar is working to reduce non-silicon manufacturing cost to less than 60 cents per watt by the end of 2012, which will give the company a competitive advantage. This company is one of China's "blue chip" solar stocks, and it is likely to lead an industry rebound when it comes. With the recent financial report out of the way, and the stock below $8 per share, it appears be the right time to start buying in stages.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Louis Navellier]

You might say that China Green Agriculture (CGA) is the salt of the earth when it comes to China stocks. Well, maybe not salt in the literal sense, just more in the metaphoric sense.

Literally, China Green Agriculture is a maker of fertilizer. The company’s humic acid organic liquid compound fertilizers help enrich the soil needed to grow the food that sustains China’s ginormous population. The company produces approximately 119 fertilizer products, and it markets those products to private wholesalers and retailers of agricultural farm products.

And talk about strong price momentum — CGA shares are up 360% over the past 12 months!

I rate CGA an A, making it a strong buy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 stock that's very close to triggering a big breakout trade is Clean Diesel Technologies(CDTI), a vertically integrated global manufacturer and distributor of emissions control systems and products, focused in the heavy duty diesel and light duty vehicle markets. This stock is down huge in 2011, with shares off by over 65%.

If you take a look at the chart for Clean Diesel Technologies, you'll notice that this stock dropped big from its July high of $8 to a recent low of $1.50 a share. Since printing that low, the stock has now moved into sideways pattern between $2.58 and 3.22 a share. A move outside of that shorter-term sideways pattern will likely set this stock up for its next big trend.

Trades should now watch CDTI for a near-term breakout above $3.22 on heavy volume. Look for volume that's tracking in close to or above its three-month average action of 268,131 shares.

    >>7 Stocks Rising on Huge Volume

At last check, volume has already hit over 350,000 shares, which is well above the average levels. Traders should now wait and see if the stock can close above $3.22. A close above that level should set this stock up to re-test its 200-day moving average of $4.58, or possibly trend much higher.

You could now be a buyer of this stock above $3.22 if we get that strong close today. I would simply use a mental stop that's a few percentage points below $3.22, or that's just below the 50-day at $3.11 a share. I would then add to any long positions once CDTI takes out $3.60 and then $4.20 on high-volume.

  • [By Hawkinvest]

LDK Solar (LDK) is one of the largest solar companies, but it has a balance sheet that concerns me. According to Yahoo Finance, LDK has a debt load of over $3.5 billion and with the industry still struggling, that is too much risk for my tastes. The company expanded aggressively in the past few years, but that expansion now looks poorly timed. When the stock was trading below $4, I thought it made sense to do some bottom-fishing, but the shares have more than doubled from the 52 week low, and look vulnerable at these levels.

An incentive for American companies with hordes of cash over seas is to allow them to repatriate that cash in exchange for bringing back to the US at least 50% of the jobs now being done by foreigners.....This would have to be a permanent rule.

So you feel American citizens should be glad to have a job that pays $2.00 hour? And if they did take this $2.00 hr job, how could they hope to provide shelter and food for their family? The reason Asian workers can survive on these $2.00 hr jobs is because their government completely controls the economy.

This Week in Biotech

With the SPDR S&P Biotech Index up 19% over the trailing-12-month period, it's evident that investment dollars are willingly flowing into the biotech sector. Keeping that in mind, let's have a look at some of the rulings, studies, and companies that made waves in the sector last week.

As to be expected during a very volatile week, we had a smattering of good and bad news with regard to clinical trials in the biotech sector.

Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ: NKTR  ) delivered a double-digit gain for shareholders this week after reporting positive top-line data for NKTR-181, its oral chronic pain-treatment drug. NKTR-181 is an opioid-based compound that's designed to enter the brain slower than traditional opiates like oxycodone without sacrificing effectiveness and ultimately reducing addiction-like qualities to the medication. In trials, the data demonstrated that NKTR-181 had a statistically significant lower "drug liking" and "feeling high" score than oxycodone. While I'd certainly exercise caution in getting too excited, as the Food and Drug Administration is very harsh with regard to its regulation of opioid-based drugs, it's nonetheless good news for Nektar.

Shareholders in Novartis (NYSE: NVS  ) also have a reason to rejoice this week following an announcement from the FDA that its investigational acute heart failure drug, RLX030, also known as serelaxin, had been granted the "breakthrough therapy" designation. The FDA's decision to grant this status for Novartis' heart failure drug was based on having demonstrated in phase 3 trials a 37% reduction in mortality six months after an acute heart failure episode, compared with patients receiving standard treatment. The breakthrough therapy designation should allow it an expedited pathway to approval, assuming it continues to demonstrate safety comparable with the placebo in trials.

It certainly wasn't smiles for everyone on the clinical front, though, as Idenix Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: IDIX  ) took a late-week 31% tumble after announcing that the FDA was requesting additional safety information about its preclinical investigational hepatitis-C drug, IDX20963. As my Foolish colleague Brian Orelli noted, it's not exactly clear what information the FDA is looking for, but this inquiry puts a hold on Idenix's starting clinical trials until it satisfies the requests of the FDA. This marks the third pipeline candidate that's been placed on clinical hold in just the past year and could be the last straw for fed-up investors.

Beyond clinical data, rare disease-focused biopharmaceutical company ViroPharma (NASDAQ: VPHM  ) rose after a Reuters report noted multiple unnamed pharmaceutical companies showing early interest in acquiring the company. Although ViroPharma itself may not be interested in selling itself, big pharmaceutical companies with aging pipelines certainly have to like the way sales of hereditary angioedema drug Cinryze have exploded higher. In addition, ViroPharma received orphan drug status in Europe for maribavir, its anti-cytomegalovirus drug, just over a week ago. Even if a buyout isn't on the table, there are plenty of reasons ViroPharma should be on your Watchlist.

Last, but certainly not least, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) made waves by announcing the acquisition of Aragon Pharmaceuticals for $650 million upfront, with the potential for an additional $350 million in royalty payments, to get a hold of its clinical-stage metastatic prostate cancer drug, ARN-509. The move is particularly intriguing because J&J already has an FDA-approved drug for advanced prostate cancer in Zytiga. This could signal J&J's expectations that the prostate cancer market is growing rapidly enough that it can accommodate what could wind up being a few potential blockbuster treatments without getting overcrowded.

Hot or Not: Q2 Midstream Earnings Roundup

Second-quarter midstream earnings have finally started to trickle in, as energy giants Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP  ) and TransCanada (NYSE: TRP  ) have reported, as well as a couple of smaller outfits, EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQT  ) and NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS  ) . The industry is off to a great start, and the week was made even more impressive by a spectacular midstream IPO. More on that later, but first the earnings recap.

Q2 Earnings round-up
Kinder Morgan kicked off second-quarter reporting for the midstream industry 10 days ago, posting some knockout numbers. Much of the growth at Kinder Morgan was driven by its recent acquisition of Copano Energy, as well as dropdowns from its 2012 acquisition of El Paso. Four out of Kinder Morgan's five business segments posted year-over-year growth, and all of the Kinder Morgan entities increased their distributions to investors.

TransCanada reported on Friday, and investors were either disappointed or delighted, depending on how high they set their expectations. The company missed analyst estimates but increased revenue and earnings per share on a year-over-year basis. Two of its three business segments posted growth compared with the second quarter last year, including its energy segment, which nearly doubled.

EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQT  ) officially has four full quarters under its public-company belt, and things are going pretty well for the tiny midstream. It reported Friday, announcing that adjusted operating income was 24% higher year over year. Distributable cash flow was $21.1 million for the quarter and led to an 8% increase sequentially in the partnership's distribution payment. EQT Midstream announced that it was increasing its yearlong guidance range for adjusted EBITDA, now $113 million to $118 million, and distributable cash flow, now $95 million to $100 million.

NuStar Energy (NYSE: NS  ) executed a 180-degree turnaround from the second quarter of 2012. The partnership posted EBITDA of $112.8 million, compared with a loss of $161.4 million a year ago. As a result, distributable cash flow increased from $31.5 million last year to $55.1 million this year. Much of the downside to the 2012 numbers came at the hands of asset impairment charges related to business restructuring, as the partnership moved to limit its exposure to margin-based revenue. The Eagle Ford shale drove organic growth at NuStar for the quarter, which is more or less an industry trend right now.

More to come
In addition to earnings season, two new midstream MLPs joined the fray this week, as Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP  ) and Marlin Midstream Partners both held initial public offerings. Phillips 66 Partners had the market really moving on Tuesday, climbing more than 29% on its first day of trading. Marlin Midstream was more or less a dud, falling 2.5% when it made its debut on Friday.

On deck
Of course, the great majority of midstream companies have yet to report. Next week Enbridge, Enterprise Products Partners, and Magellan Midstream Partners all report on Thursday, Aug. 1.
