Top Value Stocks To Buy Right Now

Auto companies have historically been terrible investments for long-term investors. Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy in the late 1970s and finally succumbed to financial pressure when it filed for Chapter 11 in 2009, the same yearGeneral Motors became sarcastically known as Government Motors. Delphi, Visteon, Lamborghini (1978), Daewoo, and others have also gone bankrupt and even such automakers asBMW,Nissan, andMitsubishi each have their stories about close calls with bankruptcy.

It's against this rough backdrop that I analyze Ford's (NYSE: F  ) current standing in the auto market and whether or not investors should see the stock as a value or a value trap.

A savior for the auto industry
The biggest change for Ford over the past decade is the man in charge. Bill Ford Jr. was a great family name but a less-than-impressive executive. Enter Alan Mulally, a Boeing executive with no car experience who took over the company in 2006. By then, Detroit was already well into decline and Mulally faced the daunting task of making Ford's vehicles relevant again.

Advisors' Opinion:

As a convenience store, it doesn’t have direct competition fromDollar Tree (DLTR) or Family Dollar (FDO) because these dollar stores aren exclusively focused on food (and they have no gasoline or cigarette sales), and theye targeted at the folks who are trying to save money over convenience, not vice versa. The convenience angle is another reason whyWalmart (WMT) and Costco (COST)aren’t competitors, since those behemoths are about a total shopping experience.

    Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

But even with the Dow under pressure, a few stocks managed to post some sizable gains. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) led the Dow's gainers, rising 1.2% as the company announced that it would execute another $1 billion under an accelerated stock repurchase transaction, working with France's Societe Generale to facilitate the purchase. The transaction marks the second time Caterpillar has used the tactic, with a previously announced $1 billion repurchase in April having been completed last month. The moves show how healthy Caterpillar's cash flow is, but it's unclear how well they fit with the company's less optimistic assessment of its long-term earnings outlook.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) is scheduled to release its quarterly earnings report tomorrow, and investors are bracing for a substantial drop in net income. Yet for all of Caterpillar's woes, the long-term question is whether the pullback is part of a normal cyclical decline or the result of longer-term macroeconomic trends toward slowing growth in formerly red-hot areas of the world.

A Deep Dive Into 3D Systems, Part 11: Is This 3-D Printing Naysayer Right?

Whitney Tilson, a well-known fund manager, shorted shares of 3-D printer manufacturer 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD  ) shortly before the share price peaked in early January. He's made out pretty well since then, as the share price has dropped by 38% since its January high, as of this writing. However, he based part of his thesis on an earlier report written by the group at Citron Research. Because Tilson referred to that report, and I respect his investing chops, I decided to review it -- again -- to see whether there was something I had missed the first time. Unfortunately, I came to the same conclusion I did the first time: Unlike Tilson's argument, no serious investor should take it seriously.

Missed opportunities and outright fails
The report was published in February 2013. In the following highlights, comments and quotes from Citron are italicized, followed with my comments in plain text.

"When it comes to calling out a bubble stock, we are yet to be wrong ... all the way back to the original dot-com bubble. In this article, Citron will detail the bubble that has enveloped 3D Systems."

That excerpt from the opening paragraph apparently attempts to establish Citron's credibility. However, nobody in investing is perfect. As an investor needing to judge how much trust to put in any analyst, my confidence in the analysis would be much higher if Citron showed us its entire track record, with all its right and wrong calls. Citron doesn't.

"Promotional management. Behind every good bubble there is a good promoter, in this case we have the best in [CEO] Avi Reichental. ... His commentary on his space sounds more like the words of PT Barnum than that of a well-polished CEO."

No doubt Reichental is a salesman. Most CEOs are very big on their companies, so he's hardly alone there. But Citron doesn't go on to show how any of Reichental's comments have led the company astray or hurt investors. As it stands, we're left with surface-level criticism.

Citron ridicules several examples of 3D printing:

Presents a toy dinosaur head as an example of "as big as the Internet." "an egg cup? Really?" [bold in the original] "We did find one industry that is being transformed by 3D printing ... the sex toy industry. Look what you can make with your 3D printer! A Justin Bieber vibrator."

None of these is really that devastating in pulling down the usefulness of additive manufacturing. It's like criticizing Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) because its printers are used to print stick-figure cartoons. In reality, it doesn't take much effort to find examples where 3-D printing and 3D Systems are changing the face of what can be done. Here are three counterexamples:

Artificial leg fairings (thanks to 3D Systems's 2012 acquisition of Bespoke Innovations). These bring style and aesthetics to artificial limbs, making the people who use them happier. 3D Systems's involvement in producing a hybrid robotic exoskeleton to help people walk, creating custom parts that perfectly fit the wearer. Custom-fit props for movies. The recent hit Gravity extensively used 3-D printing to produce helmets that perfectly fit the actors.

"Reichental [tipped] his hand about his sensitivity to stock movements in this decision to split the stock (3 for 2). The announcement of this meaningless transaction makes it appear to Citron that the company would rather have you buy their stock than buy their products."

Again, Citron fails to follow up and present evidence that Reichental is obsessed with the stock price. Does he regularly talk about the stock price in public and argue why it should be higher? If so, Citron shows no such quotations.

Indeed, in 3D Systems's proxy statement (consistently since at least 2012), the company has consistently included a strong statement against tying share price to financial incentives for its named executive officers: "While some people consider stock performance to be a significant factor in compensation decisions ... we do not consider stock performance as a controlling factor in making compensation decisions since short-term movements in our stock price and total return to stockholders as reflected in the performance of our stock price are subject to factors ... unrelated to our performance."

Citron specifically calls out The Motley Fool's marketing material as being the reason for the stock's price climb. After requesting and receiving further material from TMF, Citron writes, "There is so much critical misinformation in this slide deck that we will not waste time dissecting it."

David Gardner, co-founder of The Motley Fool and the advisor making recommendations for several 3-D printing companies in two different services of ours, certainly believes that 3-D printing is a game-changer. Marketing material for those two services has pointed out the opportunities represented by 3-D printing and 3D Systems and suggested that people should invest in that company.

However, Citron's "we will not waste time" comment is a broad statement, rather than a specific refutation. By refusing to list specifics, it appears either unwilling to go to the trouble, or underconfident in the strength of its arguments. (Note, however, that I work for TMF, so take my comments with a grain of salt.)

From the marketing material Citron had, it quotes The Motley Fool's ownership disclosure. At the time, the Fool was short Jan 2014 $55 calls. Citron equates this with the Fool not believing the company is worth more than $55 in a year, in direct contrast to the Fool's promotional material.

Here, Citron messed up. The marketing material for 3D Systems comes from the Stock Advisor service, which recommends 3D Systems as a buy. The ownership position was made by Pro, a different service within the Fool that's run by another advisor. The Fool has long publicly stated that management does not insist that each service hold the same opinion. In fact, we encourage differences of opinion.

It's apparent that Citron did not contact the Fool for an explanation of what the disclosed position nvolved and why it was made. I've talked with Jeff Fischer, the advisor for Pro, about that investment. He told me it was an income-producing investment called a "covered strangle," which combines stock ownership with options. Because its goal was to produce income, he was indifferent to where the share price would be when the options expired, and he'd continue the strategy (or not) depending on the options available at expiration. The January 2014 $55 option was chosen solely because it generated a decent amount of income at the time.

Citron writes that 3D Systems spent 6.5% of revenue on R&D, then criticizes the company for low spending -- without providing the dollar amount.

Three things are troubling here. First, out of context, that percentage means nothing. What is the normal level of R&D spending at 3D Systems? (The 6.5% figure was actually lower than the average from 2008-2012.)

Second, how does this spending level compare with other, similar companies, such as Stratasys (NASDAQ: SSYS  ) ? (As it happens, it was lower than the portion of revenue Stratasys devoted to R&D in 2012.) Citron fails to provide these easily found facts, even though their inclusion might strengthen its argument.

Third, the original report mistakenly said that $6.5 million was spent, not 6.5% of revenue. While readers should be happy that Citron corrected the mistake and noted the correction, they should be unhappy because the original fact-checking was not very thorough. It's an easily checked figure.

Citron claims that every investor seems to think 3D Systems makes parts for F-18 jet engines -- or is it the whole engine? It quotes a Forbes article in support.

I don't know what every investor seems to think, and neither, truthfully, does Citron. Searching "3D Systems F-18" pulls up several million results. The second result listed when I did that search (an article at Kurzweil published before Citron wrote its report) refers to something said by Cathy Lewis, a 3D Systems spokeswoman: "3D Systems is also involved in a consortium that is printing 90 parts for F-18 fighter jets and that plans to print 900 parts for F-35 fighter jets, according to Lewis." About the same time, The Economist wrote something very similar.

In the Forbes article, Reichental is quoted saying that "about 90 parts installed on board are printed on our printers," which Citron takes to mean printed by 3D Systems. It goes to some trouble proving that 3D Systems gets no revenue from the F-18 manufacture. Where Citron fails, though, is in distinguishing between "the company's printers," which could mean anyone using them and is what Reichental said, and "the company (itself) prints."

If someone wants to conclude that 3D Systems prints parts for the F-18, that's apparently inaccurate. And 3D Systems itself doesn't appear to make that claim.

Citron highlights another example of a useless product, a comb, and then writes, "the analyst printed his objects using a Makerbot. ... We know this from what he printed out."

How does Citron know that exactly? Was it the material used, the actual item, or what? The report presents no proof.

Citron includes a section titled "Roll up of low-valued companies." It specifically declines analysis of how these could be hurting 3D Systems through "accounting engineering and sheer gimmickry to grossly exaggerate their organic growth." Citron writes, "We do not feel like getting into an accounting argument."

This refers to supposed accounting gimmicks by 3D Systems that others have pointed out. Citron claims that these alleged efforts make organic growth look better than it really should be. A few months before Citron's report was published, I looked at one such argument from Seeking Alpha and found it less than compelling.

My final thoughts
While Citron might indeed turn out to be right about the long-term viability of 3-D printing in general and 3D Systems in particular, I had a very difficult time getting past all the hyperbole and emotional writing used in this report.

The comb, dinosaur head, egg cup, and Bieber vibrator are indeed silly, but those particular items are not what will lead to success for 3D Systems. However, Citron apparently deliberately avoided mentioning things that would, such as the artificial limb fairings.

Add in the several times where Citron failed to provide detailed examples as to why one should short 3D Systems stock, and I have a hard time taking this report seriously.

Almost exactly a year later, this past January, Citron came out with another report, titled "Everything 3D Systems Does Not Want You to Know About Their Business." It's better than this one, and I'll look at it next.

Top 5 Long Term Companies To Own For 2014

When thinking about General Mills (GIS) you likely associate the company with its flagship cereal brands like Cheerios, Wheaties and Lucky Charms Cheerios alone controls roughly 13% of the cereal market. Yet the company also has an abundance of additional powerhouse brands under its corporate umbrella. For instance, Betty Crocker, Bisquick, Gold Medal, Pillsbury, Haagen-Dazs, Green Giant, Hamburger Helper, Totino, Nature Valley, Progresso, Yoplait and many more names all send their proceeds to the century-and-a-half-old incorporation that is General Mills.

As such, you might imagine that the company profits are quite consistent. In viewing the business through the lens of the fundamentals analyzer software tool, or F.A.S.T. Graphs we can see that this has indeed been the case.

Sure there have been some down years four since the end of 2000 but in general (no pun intended) General Mills has been reasonably consistent. Over this time period operating earnings have grown by just under 7% a year, as profits and dividends march higher over the long term.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

Firms across Germany's DAX have caught on. BASF (NASDAQOTH: BASFY  ) shares haven't had a great year so far, but the world's largest chemicals firm is looking around the world for growth. The company seeks to double its customer base in the Asia-Pacific region by 2020 in its chemicals and materials business, projecting sales in Asia to double from last year's 12.5 million euros to 25 million euros by that year. That kind of global growth will benefit investors, and the less BASF and other German stocks rely on Europe for sales, the better shareholders will do.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

It was only a matter of time. Last month BASF (NASDAQOTH: BASFY  ) , the world's largest chemical company, announced three separate developments that will thrust it from being a mediocre player in industrial enzymes to a dominant force. BASF acquired Henkel's detergent enzyme technology, licensed the C1 biotechnology platform from Dyadic, and befriended Direvo Industrial Biotechnology from Germany for a next-generation animal feed enzyme.

For Google, the shift in the way the justice system looks at and handles patent infringement claims meant its subsidiary, Motorola Mobility, unsuccessfully bid to convince U.S. courts that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was illegally using Google's/Motorola's approach for sending data to a mobile device. For Akamai Technologies, it means that the technology company will need to re-explain - and ultimately re-prove - to an appellate court that Limelight Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:LLNW) infringed on an Akamai patent even though a lower court had already ruled in favor of AKAM. And for Soverain Software, the legal system's new attitude meant it wouldn't even bother hearing its appeal for a case it lost against Newegg last year... a case it's tried against several companies, losing every time.

The more Kirkland's (Nasdaq: KIRK  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in! growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. AP/Jim Mone Is Bitcoin a slam-dunk as the currency of the future? The Sacramento Kings seem to think so. The NBA team recently became the first pro sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. Basketball fans will be able not only to purchase tickets and merchandise online with the digital cryptocurrency, but also to use it to buy souvenirs at the arena come game time. The team is the latest in a growing number of commercial entities finding a slot in their virtual cash registers for Bitcoin. Little by little, momentum is building for a widespread acceptance of the upstart currency. Overstocking The Kings' drive towards the Bitcoin basket comes a week after the big online retailer Overstock.com (OSTK) announced it would start accepting payments in the currency. The move was an instant hit -- the first day the company had the nifty Bitcoin button as an option in its shopping cart, its customers used it to make more than 800 transactions for total sales of around $130,000. Overstock.com was by no means the first online marketplace to accept the currency. Numerous web retailers have been doing so for some time. It's a natural fit, %VIRTUAL-article-sponsoredlinks in a way, since Bitcoin exists solely in the digital realm. Customers booking flights on discount travel operator CheapAir.com, for example, can use Bitcoin to buy their tickets, as can love seekers on dating site OkCupid, owned by IAC/InteractiveCorp (IACI). These digital players are going to have plenty of company. Earlier this month, online games purveyor Zynga (ZNGA) started to dip its toes in the water, announcing that it was testing Bitcoin payments for some of its titles in conjunction with specialist transaction facilitator BitPay. But if Overstock.com didn't get there first, it's still the largest and most prominent e-retailer to take the Bitcoin plunge thus far. This is a big win for the currency and its advocates, and Overstock.com will surely be followed by more well-known comp

InterActiveCorp (IACI) is Barry Diller conglomerate of internet companies, not terribly different from John Malone Liberty Interactive (LINTA). The strategy for IACI stock has been to wait for a leader in a given sector to emerge and then buy it up, or at least a portion of it. These businesses either have a history of generating lots of cash flow, or have the potential to do so.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Intevac (IVAC) provides process manufacturing equipment solutions to the hard disk drive industry and high-productivity process manufacturing equipment and inspection solutions to the photovoltaic industry. This stock closed up 8.5% to $6.74 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $6.23-$6.75

    52-Week Range: $4.06-$6.80

    Tuesday's Volume: 263,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 140,032

From a technical perspective, IVAC soared higher here right off some near-term support at $6.25 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last three months, with shares moving higher from its low of $4.31 to its recent high of $6.80. During that move, shares of IVAC have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of IVAC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if IVAC manages to take out its 52-week high at $6.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IVAC as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $6.25 or at $5.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above its 52-week high at $6.80 with volume that hits near or above 140,032 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then IVAC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at $8 to $8.37. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $9 to $9.36 within range for shares of IVAC.

Why These Royalty Trusts Are Guaranteed to Fail and 1 MLP That Won't

In a previous article I outlined why royalty trusts were terrible long-term investments and why income investors should choose upstream MLPs as an alternative. Since that time, while researching Linn Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) and its recent deal with ExxonMobil a stark contrast has become evident to me that I wanted to share with you.

As pointed out by my colleague Matt DiLallo in this article comparing SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) , SandRidge Energy's trusts were established as mere financing vehicles for the parent company to invest in its own drilling program. For example, SandRidge Energy has plans to invest $1.55 billion annually in its Mississippi lime assets through 2016 in order to grow production by 20%-25% annually (in spite of expected decline rates of 35% in 2014, 20% in 2015, and 15% in 2016).

SandRidge Energy has stated that it will complete its drilling program for SandRidge Mississippian Trust II by 2015. The pace of drilling has been dropping (6.9 new wells drilled in Q1 vs 10.7 in the prior quarter) and despite the fact that new wells are still being added, SandRidge Mississippian Trust II reported a 17% decline in oil production resulting in a 13.9% decline in distributable income on a quarter-to-quarter basis.

SDT Total Return Price Chart
SDT Total Return Price data by YCharts

As the chart illustrates, SandRidge's other royalty trust, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) , which has already had its final wells drilled, has been experiencing a severe decline in distributions, a result of its massive quarterly production declines of 26%, 21%, and 22% immediately after the last well was drilled.

A royalty trust, by design cannot grow through acquisitions. The only way for distributable income to grow is through additional drilling or commodity price increases. With SandRidge Energy stating that its drilling program is coming to a close both of its trusts are facing perpetual declines in production, distributions, and unit prices. Why would SandRidge Energy cut off its trusts and refuse to invest in additional drilling? Simply put, because it has concluded that the assets owned by its trusts are tapped out and not worth further investment.

According to its prospectus, SandRidge Energy started out owning 38.4% (6 million units) of its Mississippian Trust I and 47.7% of Trust II (12.2 million units). It received incentive distribution rights of 50% of distributable income for exceeding certain target distributions by 20%.

Today, SandRidge Energy owns just 528,000 units of Mississippian Trust I and 6.24 million of Trust II, having sold 91% and 51% of its respective stakes. A key investing principle at The Motley Fool is investing alongside management (high insider ownership). If a founder of a company liquidated such enormous percentages of his/her original holdings, shareholders might rightfully worry about the company's future. In this case, SandRidge Energy's lack of further investment in its trusts is a clear sign to investors that SandRidge Mississippian Trusts I and II have no future and don't deserve a position in your portfolio.

Linn Energy: growth you can believe in
I view Linn Energy and its non-MLP alternative LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  )  as one of the highest quality high-yield investments in America, specifically because of its strong track record of accretive acquisitions and growth (60 acquisitions worth $15 billion since its 2006 IPO).

LINE Total Return Price Chart
LINE Total Return Price data by YCharts

But what has me really excited about Linn Energy is its latest deal, a massive land swap with ExxonMobil, and what it means for the future of how this MLP does business.

For an in-depth explanation of the deal see this article, but the bottom line is this: Linn Energy traded 25,000 acres of Permian basin land (expensive to drill and fast depleting) for 500,000 acres of Hugoton basin land (already producing substantial natural gas and a 6% decline rate).

In the process it lowered its costs, overall production decline rate, and secured its distribution. But Linn Energy might just be getting started. It still owns 30,000 acres of Permian land (that's sitting atop 75 billion barrels of oil in the world's largest oil deposit) as well as 545,000 net acres of Midcontinent assets that face high decline rates but are still of interest to companies such as Apache and SandRidge Energy.

With Linn Energy's CEO Mark Ellis stating a desire to monetize not only Linn's Permian but also Midcontinent assets, future land-swap deals could be in the works, which would mean likely continued distribution growth for Linn Energy and LinnCo investors (historically 4% annual growth on top of a 9.4%-9.8% yield).

Foolish bottom line
Royalty trusts are designed to be a decaying short-term investment. Upstream MLPs, such as Linn Energy and LinnCo, on the other hand, are living, growing investments with a proven track record of safe, consistent income, and distribution growth along with excellent long-term prospects. Investors considering SandRidge Mississippian Trusts should follow the example of SandRidge Energy: sell their positions, and consider Linn Energy or LinnCo as superior alternatives.

Top 5 Diversified Bank Companies To Invest In Right Now

Shares of International Business Machines (IBM) sold off aggressively in after-hours trading. Investors and analysts are not happy that "Big Blue" reported a big miss on its quarterly revenues.

I do not expect anything spectacular in the short to medium term, yet long term prospects should continue to look good as long as the company is taking the rapidly changing developments within the industry seriously, and continues to act upon this.

Third Quarter Results

IBM generated third quarter revenues of $23.72 billion, down 4.1% on the year before. Roughly half of those revenue declines are attributable to adverse foreign currency movements. Consensus estimates for revenues stood at $24.74 billion, implying that IBM missed consensus estimates by a full billion.

The company reported net earnings of $4.04 billion, up 5.7% on the year before. Diluted earnings per share advanced from $3.33 per share last year to $3.68 per share.
