Top 10 US Companies To Watch In Right Now

LONDON -- It's a long time since the FTSE 100 (FTSEINDICES: ^FTSE  ) last came close to a 52-week low -- in fact, it was as long ago as June 2012 when it touched the depths of 5,230 points. Since then, the index of top U.K. shares has soared to today's 6,771 points for a rise of about 30%, and that's even after last week's mini-slump from a 52-week high of 6,876.

But things haven't been quite so rosy for everyone. Here are three members of the various FTSE indexes slumping to new lows.

EVRAZ (LSE: EVR  )
Steel producer EVRAZ has seen its share price side ever lower, as the firm has been suffering from weak demand for its products -- and the price has hit a new 52-week low of 145 pence today. The price is now down about 56% since its high of 330 pence set in January this year.

After the firm recorded a loss for the year to December 2012, forecasts for EVRAZ are not glowing right now. There is effectively no profit expected this year, and the forecast return to something decent for 2014 would put the shares on a price-to-earnings ratio of 14, which at this stage does not look like a screaming bargain to me.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Eric Parnell]

After taking these risks into consideration, maintaining an allocation to stocks remains worthwhile in such an environment. Given the volatility that often accompanies the turbulent May to October period, it may offer some particularly good trading opportunities as either broader markets or specific securities experience steep corrections followed by swift rallies. But risks must be monitored closely and holdings should be viewed with a potentially shorter time horizon depending on how events unfold in the coming months. Emphasizing stocks that exhibit quality, low volatility, value and current income that are also not technically overbought provides an additional way to control risk in the current environment. This includes allocations such as the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG) and high quality individual names such as Exxon Mobil (XOM), International Business Machines (IBM), McDonald's (MCD), General Electric (GE) and Oracle (ORCL). It should be noted that IBM, General Electric and Oracle were all positions that were scooped up following recent sharp pullbacks.

5 Best Quality Stocks To Buy Right Now

In a recent speech at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen discussed the issue of income and wealth inequality, noting that the past few decades have caused a rift between the have and have-nots that may be the largest in our nation's history. From 1989 to 2013, income for the top 5% of earners grew by 38%, while the rest of the population saw gains of less than 10%.

There are many reasons for this disparity in wealth, not the least of which was the economic crisis that followed the housing crash. As far as income is concerned, I think the biggest contributor to the yawning gap between rich and poor is the current state of job creation. Simply put, most of the jobs available these days are clustered toward the low end of the wage spectrum.

An ongoing problem, spurred to new heights since 2008
Yellen is right that the gap between high and low earners has been widening for decades. Since 1979, the median usual weekly earnings hasn't changed much at all, and wage stagnation means that the average pay workers take home today doesn't buy any more than it did back then.

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

Marchex (MCHX) operates as a mobile and call advertising technology company in the U.S. and Canada. This stock closed up 5.8% to $4.19 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $3.94-$4.35

    52-Week Range: $3.92-$12.84

    Tuesday's Volume: 1.35 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 501,856

From a technical perspective, MCHX ripped higher here right above its new 52-week low of $3.92 with heavy upside volume flows. This stock recently gapped down sharply from just over $7.50 to below $4 with heavy downside volume. Following that move, shares of MCHX have now started to rebound off that $3.92 low and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if MCHX manages to clear its gap-down-day high of $4.50 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MCHX as long as it's trending above its new 52-week low of $3.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above $4.50 with volume that hits near or above 501,856 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MCHX will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone that started just above $7.50.

(NASDAQ:OXGN), and decided to skip an entry on either or both becaus! e they were too frothy at the time, then here's some good news.... you're getting a second chance. Both NURO and OXGN are getting their proverbial second wind, and they're doing so at a price much lower than the price you would have had to pay for either just a few days ago. There's just one catch - you may want to hurry of you want in. This second wind is unfurling as rapidly as the first surges did.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

In the very short run, OXiGENE Inc. (NASDAQ:OXGN) is overbought and probably due for a setback, not unlike the all the other one-day surges and subsequent pullbacks we've seen from the stock since February of this year. Today's pop from OXGN, however, is quite different than all the rest... this time, it's got a legitimate shot at following through on the upside effort. Ergo, this little biopharma name is actually one of the market's best 'trades' right now.

Shares of Oxigene Inc. (OXGN) more than doubled on very heavy volume after the microcap biotech said a mid-stage study of its drug Zybrestat, when used with Roches Avastin, showed increased survival in ovarian cancer patients. Oxigene shares rallied 129% to $5.55 , and were one of the most heavily traded issues after hours with more than 4.2 million shares exchanging hands.

Top 5 Food Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Swiss.com Relief is on the way for travelers with food intolerances and allergies. Beginning in May, Swiss International Air Lines is instituting an "allergy-friendly" policy. "We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers' need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions," said Frank Maier, Swiss's head of product and services. "So we've been working with [the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation] to provide a concrete response to these demands to make everyone's air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible." The changes -- which make it the world's first airline to get a seal of approval from the foundation -- address environmental allergens and food intolerances, but not food allergies. Gentle Soaps Added, Air Fresheners Removed Changes will include making available gluten- and lactose-free snacks and drinks in flight and "allergy-friendly" foods in Swiss lounges in Switzerland. Passengers with food intolerances will be able to order special meals in all seating classes during long flights, but only in business class within Europe. Requests for special meals must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the scheduled departure. In addition, changes will be made to the cabin environment, such as air filtering, gentle soaps in the lavatories and pillows stuffed with synthetic materials rather than down as an option in first and business classes. Further, the cabins will no longer have fresh flowers or air fresheners. Cabin crew members are trained to respond to allergic emergencies. Clifford Bassett, an allergist and fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, applauds the airline's efforts in addressing the growing population of individuals with food intolerances as well as those with environmental allergies and asthma. He notes the airline is not yet addressing the needs of the up to 5 percent of adults have food allergies. These passengers need to make an action plan with their allergist and travel with foods that are safe for them to eat, as well as two to four epinephrine auto-injectors. Passengers with airborne food allergies should request a barrier of 10 to 15 rows in front and behind their seat to reduce exposure, although ideally there would be no food allergens, he says.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By patokehoe]

Traditional grocers such as Kroger Co (KR) and Delhaize Group SA (DEG) are having an increasingly hard time dealing with competition from nontraditional grocers. Both of these firms have tried to adapt to the pressure stemming from rival discounters, with varying degrees of success. Whereas Kroger has been able to utilize its scale to leverage fixed costs, Delhaize has struggled to maintain margins, and is being forced to lower prices.
Fending off competitors Investment gurus John Hussman of Hussman Economtrics Advisors and Joel Greenblatt of Gotham Capital own considerable positions in Kroger, one of the largest retailers in the U.S. The firm currently operates over 2,400 supermarkets, 750 convenience stores, and 325 jewellery stores across 31 states. Shareholders have reason to be optimistic, as the company recently acquired Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc (HTSI). The $2.44 billion deal means Kroger will be looking at an 8% increase in its store base and a 4% boost in revenue.

If you're a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you're a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I've got in Jubak's Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They're the world's largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.

Hot Media Stocks To Own For 2014

Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P) may have released news that its listening hours rose by 16% in August. It also said that its total U.S. market share of all radio was 7.46%, an increase from 6.30% a year ago. And Pandora even showed that its active listener growth metrics were massive: Active listeners were 72.1 million at the end of August 2013, up 28% from a year ago. What Pandora Media did not include in its press release was that there is a massive wave of selling taking place this week and recently from insiders and management.

SEC filings have shown a very strong wave of insider selling this week, and we are not sure that the SEC filings are finished yet. When you see that Pandora’s stock price is still above $18, and when you consider that it was under $10 as recently as the start of 2013, a sensible investor might wonder if it is time to take some profits if management is taking profits.

Here are some of the insider Form 4 filings:

Robert Kavner, director: sold 9,000 shares for more than $166K John Trimble, chief revenue officer: sold 30,000 shares for about $559K Timothy Westergren, director: sold 85,000 shares for almost $1.6 million Thomas Conrad, VP: sold 55,000 shares for right at $1.02 million

Be advised that other Form 4 filings hit the tape in August while Pandora shares were strong as well. We saw another 20,000 shares sold by Trimble, another 55,000 from Conrad, another 9,000 from Kavner another 85,000 from Westergren, another 30,000 from Trimble, and yet another 55,000 or so from Conrad. We are not reviewing the insider sales on Form 4 that posted in July, but just the August filings that we tallied up to roughly another 250,000 shares sold.

Comcast provides communications and entertainment products and services to consumers and companies. The companyhas begun to turn hundreds of thousands of Chicago-area homes into virtual coffee shops, using existing Comcast equipment to build out its publicly accessible wireless network. The stock has been trending higher over the past few quarters and looks set to continue. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been increasing, which has left investors pleased about recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, Comcast has been a weak year-to-date performer. Look for Comcast to OUTPERFORM.

The cable-television M&A chatter is making its rounds again, this time with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR), Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC), and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) pegged as the three points of the ever-changing parties of a never-ending love triangle. The buzz is, well, was that CHTR was first in line to nab TWC. Today, however, it's starting to look like CMCSA is more seriously interested in Time Warner Cable than first thought. TWC shares jumped on the doubly-good news that it may well become the prize in a bidding war between Charter Communications and Comcast Corporation. Meanwhile, CMCSA shares have jumped (albeit not quite as firmly) on the prospect of its ownership of TWC. What's interesting - and perhaps telling - is the fact that not only have CHTR shares not soared in the wake of what would normally be viewed as good news, but Charter shares have actually stumbled heading into the possible bidding war. Might this be an omen of what's actually in store for Charter Communications?

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC  ) , Comcast, and Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) , have all been on the other side of the Internet subscriber fence. Phone companies such as AT&Tand Verizon began losing customers to these and other cable Internet providers some time ago, largely because of speed and connectivity issues. And now along comes Google Fiber with an alternative that blows the doors off anything Comcast, Time Warner, or Charter can offer, and often for the same or less money. Who's losing?
Even though it has multiple revenue sources, I was a bit discouraged to discover that CBS (NYSE: CBS  ) came in dead last among TV respondents, garnering less than 0.5% of the vote. Despite the poor showing among respondents, CBS must be doing something right with its other mediums (i.e., CBS Sports Network), because its first-quarter revenue and EBITDA were both records.

Wow. That didn't take long. It was only two days ago that marijuana stocks like Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), and Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP) were all the rage, flying high on the heels of a new year... a new year in which marijuana was legalized (for one reason or another) in two more states. HEMP was up as much as 700% in less than three weeks at one point. MDBX gained 300% at the beginning of the year, when recreational marijuana began to be legally sold in Colorado. CBIS jumped 400% off of its December low. MJNA nearly doubled on the advent of new marijuana venues. PHOT soared more than 130% since the end of last year on the legalization of marijuana. It was, truthfully, some of the fastest big money that traders have ever made in the market.

Iron Man Beats Batman -- and Superman Doesn’t Stand a Chance, Either

Christian Bale? You're no match for Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man 3 entered the weekend as the top grossing single-character superhero film of all time with $1.11 billion at the global gate, according  to figures from Box Office Mojo.

Last summer's The Dark Knight Rises earned $1.08 billion worldwide after 147 days in theaters. Iron Man 3 took just 22 days to break the record.

Fans want Downey Jr. back for another go in the armor, and with two consecutive billion-dollar performances, so should Marvel Studios parent Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) . No one else has demonstrated such wide box office appeal playing what had been a niche comic book character.

Can anyone top him? Actor Henry Cavill will take a shot, as the title character in next month's Man of Steel, a reboot of DC Comics' Superman franchise from director Zack Snyder, producer Christopher Nolan, and DC parent Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) .

Top 10 Casino Stocks To Own For 2015

There's a lot riding on Man of Steel, and not just for Warner. RealD (NYSE: RLD  ) gets a cut of box office receipts for showings in its 3D format, a strategy that has worked well in years past. A big gate could mean a big payday here as well.

IMAX (NYSE: IMAX  ) , meanwhile, will be counting on a rush of fans paying for early access to its large-format screenings. That approach set records around the world with Iron Man 3. (China, in particular.)

But for Warner, Man of Steel kicks off what investors should hope is a new superhero megafranchise that builds up to a planned "Justice League" film in 2015. More than 81,000 at reviews site Rotten Tomatoes already say they want to see the film. Judging from the latest action-packed trailer, I can understand why:

General Zod gives the people of Earth a warning. Sources: Warner Bros, YouTube.

Just don't expect Man of Steel to get within spitting distance of Iron Man 3. DC may rule the console, but at the cinema, Marvel is still king. Superman won't change that.

Do you agree? Please vote in the poll below, and then leave leave a comment to let us know whether you plan to see Man of Steel in 2D, RealD 3D, or IMAX.
