On Friday, hedge fund manager and market technician Tim Knight warned that the United States Natural Gas ETF (NYSE: UNG) might be headed for steep leg down. For any investors who are thinking of holding their noses and staying long natural gas, I thought I'd post a couple of quick ways to add downside protection to that ETF.
1) Hedging With Optimal Puts
3.6% cost. Uncapped upside.
These were the optimal puts*, as of Friday's close, to hedge 1000 shares of UNG against a greater-than-20% drop between now and April 18th.
As you can see at the bottom of the screen capture below, the cost of this protection, as a percentage of position value, was quite expensive at 3.55%.
2) Hedging With An Optimal Collar
No cost. 20% upside cap.

Performance so far has been consistent with the advances enjoyed by most of the MLP IPOs over the past year. In fact a few of them made major advances. As discussed in last week article No Letup for Last Year Top IPO, the best performing MLP of the year so far is Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP), which came public last summer and is up 48 percent year-to-date. Of course, there are some exceptions. Marlin Midstream Partners (Nasdaq: FISH) conducted its IPO three days after Phillips 66 Partners last year, and it has traded below its IPO price since.
- [By Robert Rapier] In last week’s MLP Investing Insider (MLPII) I took a look at the MLP IPOs from the first half of 2013. Today I review the half dozen that have debuted in the second half of 2013.
Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP) launched on July 23 as one of the most anticipated IPOs this year. PSXP owns some of the midstream logistics assets of its sponsor, Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX). PSXP has yet to announce its first distribution, but according to the IPO prospectus the minimum yield will be $0.85 per unit on an annualized basis. At the current unit price, this equates to a minimum annual yield of 2.8 percent, which is mainly a function of the huge run-up in unit price between the IPO pricing and today’s unit price. If the distribution does come in near the minimum, the unit price will almost certainly correct downward following the announcement.
Marlin Midstream Partners (Nasdaq: FISH) launched on July 26. The partnership provides natural gas gathering, transportation, treating and processing services, NGL transportation services and crude oil transloading services. Marlin’s assets include three natural gas processing facilities in Texas, two natural gas gathering systems, two NGL transportation pipelines, and two crude oil transloading facilities. Marlin expects most of the gross margin to be generated under fee-based, minimum volume commercial agreements.
Marlin targets a coverage ratio of 1.10x to support distributions. Marlin’s partnership agreement provides for a minimum quarterly distribution of $0.35 per unit for each whole quarter, or $1.40 per unit on an annualized basis. The prorated distribution for the two months of the recently concluded quarter since tje IPO should be announced soon. The minimum annual yield based on the current unit price is projected at 7.7 percent. The unit price has declined 6 percent since the IPO.

Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is part of the Kinder Morgan family of companies with a combined enterprise value of over $115B. Kinder Morgan, Inc (KMI) is Kinder Morgan Energy Partners' general partner and has incentive distribution rights and owns about 10% of the partnership. Another way to own Kinder Morgan Energy Partners is via Kinder Morgan Management (KMR), whose shares are pari passu with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners and has an equal distribution but pays its dividend in additional shares instead of cash. This in effects acts as a dividend reinvest program. - [By Aaron Levitt]
For investors, the recent drop in all three shares — along with Kinder Morgan Management LLC (KMR) have put them all near their 52-week lows and at some of the highest dividend yields not seen in years. At these prices, youe still getting strong dividend growth — about 5% for KMI — along with the chance to own the largest pipeline network in North America.

I sold Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP), 168 shares at $80.38, and I replaced it with Kinder Morgan Management (KMR), 264 shares at $75.39. KMR pays its quarterly distribution in extra shares, rather than in cash, as KMP does. For some (crazy) reason this makes it okay to hold it in a retirement account without the tax implications.

Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI ) will release its quarterly report on Wednesday, and investors have high expectations for growth from the company. With its ownership interest in Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP ) and Kinder Morgan Management (NYSE: KMR ) , Kinder Morgan continues to take advantage of the need for energy producers to transport their oil and gas to market.

3 companies seeing success in the Gulf
Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) , for instance, has had a string of exploration successes in the region, including its most recent deepwater oil discovery in the Coronado prospect about 200 miles off the Louisiana coast. The company's test well, jointly owned with ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP ) , has a 35% interest, and Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: APC ) , which has a 15% interest, unveiled more than 400 feet of oil-bearing rocks. - [By Tyler Crowe]
Hawaiians have perpetually been saddled with high gas prices, and it doesn't look like things are going to get any better. Tesoro intends to shut down its facility in the island state, leaving Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) as the only game in town. That, combined with the high costs to ship crude there, has gas prices well north of $4.00 a gallon. As gasoline prices remain high in Hawaii, don't be surprised if more and more drivers make the switch to alternative fuels

Flash-forward to today, and there's a growing movement to divest from hydrocarbons in order to deal with climate change. Part of this movement is 350.org, an organization that urges college and university endowments to divest their shares of fossil fuel companies. The group takes particular aim at Transcanada (NYSE: TRP ) because of the heavy carbon impact of the Keystone XL pipeline, as well as those companies most exposed to the "carbon bubble," including BP (NYSE: BP ) , Shell (NYSE: RDS-A ) , and Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) .
